SAMPLE PROJECTS

Below you will find a few sample environmental consulting projects I have been involved with to give you an idea of the types of projects and different companies I have worked with in the past.

Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) Audit for Metal Coating Manufacturing Facility

Objective:
Conducted a comprehensive EHS audit of a metal coating manufacturing facility to ensure compliance with relevant regulations in both the United States and Massachusetts. The primary goal was to identify existing compliance gaps, provide actionable recommendations, and assist the facility in closing these gaps to prepare for an upcoming EHS audit by the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP).
Activities:

  • On-Site Assessment: Visited the manufacturing facility to observe current operations firsthand and assess adherence to EHS protocols.

  • Regulatory Review: Reviewed operations against potentially applicable EHS regulations at both federal and state levels, focusing on requirements for the United States and Massachusetts.

  • Gap Identification: Identified regulatory compliance gaps by comparing observed practices with applicable EHS regulations.

  • Interactive Reporting: Provided the facility with an interactive report detailing applicable EHS regulations, existing compliance gaps, and recommended action items to achieve compliance.

Outcomes:

  • Gap Closure: Enabled the facility to close identified compliance gaps by implementing recommended action items and addressing deficiencies in EHS practices.

  • EHS Program Development: Assisted the facility in developing tailored EHS programs to address regulatory requirements and enhance overall environmental and worker safety practices.

  • Preparation for MassDEP Audit: Equipped the facility with the necessary tools and strategies to prepare for an upcoming EHS audit by MassDEP, ensuring readiness and compliance with state regulations.

Impact:
The EHS audit provided the metal coating manufacturing facility with a roadmap for achieving and maintaining compliance with EHS regulations. By addressing compliance gaps and implementing proactive measures, the facility enhanced its environmental stewardship, worker safety, and regulatory readiness.

EHS Compliance Roadmap for Chemical Engineering Startup

Objective:
Assisted a chemical engineering startup in evaluating environmental, health, and safety (EHS) regulatory requirements for their new facility. Aimed to identify current and future EHS obligations, anticipate growth-related compliance needs, and develop proactive strategies.
Activities:

  • Operations Assessment: Evaluated pilot-scale operations and materials usage to understand existing EHS risks.

  • Future Operations Planning: Projected three-year growth to anticipate EHS requirements as manufacturing capacity increases.

  • Regulatory Compliance Identification: Identified current EHS requirements and thresholds for additional obligations as hazardous material usage rises.

  • Permit Assistance: Helped with wastewater permit application to ensure compliance with discharge regulations.

  • Material Tracking System: Developed a system to monitor hazardous materials, improving transparency and compliance.

  • EHS Program Recommendations: Identified key EHS programs to develop, such as hazardous materials management and emergency response, to meet regulatory requirements and enhance safety culture.

Outcomes:

  • Anticipated new EHS obligations based on growth projections.

  • Obtained wastewater permit for discharge compliance.

  • Established material tracking system for enhanced compliance.

  • Recommended essential EHS programs to address regulatory requirements and promote safety.

Impact:
The EHS audit provided the metal coating manufacturing facility with a roadmap for achieving and maintaining compliance with EHS regulations. By addressing compliance gaps and implementing proactive measures, the facility enhanced its environmental stewardship, worker safety, and regulatory readiness.

PFAS Evaluation & Substitution for Aerospace Facility

Objective:
Assisted an aerospace facility in evaluating chemicals for PFAS presence, crucial due to increased scrutiny under US and Massachusetts regulations.
Activities:

  • Material Inventory: Conducted comprehensive inventory to find potential PFAS sources.

  • Chemical Research: Analyzed chemical constituents to assess PFAS content and risks.

  • Stoichiometry Evaluation: Determined PFAS presence in chemicals via stoichiometry.

  • PFAS Identification: Identified PFAS-containing materials in use.

  • Substitution Recommendations: Provided PFAS-free alternatives to manage risks and ensure compliance.

Outcomes:

  • Identified PFAS materials, aiding risk management and compliance.

  • Delivered PFAS-free substitution recommendations.

  • Enabled compliance with regulations and promoted environmental responsibility.

Impact: Project contributed to risk mitigation, environmental stewardship, and compliance, demonstrating the facility's commitment to safety and sustainability.
